The Global Patient: Free trade in health care services
Published on : Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Health care expenditure in rich countries have risen to 9% of GDP in 2007, almost double since 1970. This is a massive wasted opportunity. Free trade in health care could help rich countries keep the lid on health care inflation while helping poorer countries attract investment and skills, and retain valuable medical professionals. Patients are already voting with their feet: in 2006 alone, Singapore treated 500,000 foreign patients, India treated 600,000 and Thailand around 1.2 million, writes Fredrik Erixon and Lucy Davis in the South China Morning Post
